www.iltanet.org Speech-to-Text Translation in Exchange 2010 by Michael Hoey of Winston & Strawn LLP Michael Hoey is the Network Operations Center Supervisor at Winston & Strawn LLP, and he has 15 years of experience in information technology. Michael is responsible for Winston's global messaging infrastructure in addition to his role of supervising the network operations center. Over the past few years there has been great improvement in how systems are performing speech-to- text translation. Some of these solutions may come in the form of third-party utilities or as a feature bundled into a product. Microsoft's attempt at speech-to-text translation, or Voice Mail Preview, is one such feature bundled with Exchange 2010 Unified Messaging. Voice Mail Preview uses automatic speech recognition (ASR) and is able to add a text version of the voicemail audio file to voicemail messages. Winston & Strawn LLP recently completed a migration from the Exchange 2007 to the 2010 platform across multiple countries, utilizing different languages and dialects, which has given us some insight on the Voice Mail Preview feature. Installation/Configuration Installation and/or configuration of the Voice Mail Preview option in Exchange 2010 is fairly straightforward.
