A lot of the information found on the Internet related to Microsoft search engine functionality can be very confusing. For instance, when reading about the functionality found in FS4SP, the document may not indicate what functionality is also found in SharePoint Server 2010 Search. Common Features in Both Products Feature Description Search Refinement Boolean Query Syntax Best Bets People Search Click-Through Relevancy Query Suggestions Taxonomy Integration Development Windows 7 Search Results that are frequently selected in search results rank higher Ability to filter results based on metadata And, Or, Not A FS4SP implementation is really a hybrid solution since it still requires SharePoint Server Search for full functionality. SharePoint search is used to support the crawling interface, people-search capabilities and query federation, which is the ability to pass the query to another search engine such as Google or Bing. In a FS4SP implementation, the SharePoint content search and processing modules are replaced with FAST modules. The FS4SP servers handle content processing and the core search functionality. As far as architecture, SharePoint Server 2010 Search relies heavily on SQL Server, while FS4SP relies more on the file system. Because FS4SP has advanced content processing and does not use SQL Server, it generally requires more than double the amount of file system storage than SharePoint Server 2010 Search does.
