You've Got To Have Principles managers. Communication among the project team members should come in the following formats: • A regular meeting schedule throughout the various phases of the project to generate a sense among team members that the project is being well- controlled and managed • Clear and concise action items that summarize discussions in writing, avoiding any confusion or misunderstanding • A comparison of project status to defined milestones that allows you to continuously make adjustments in the project timelines or accelerate efforts in specific areas in order to meet timelines Communicate with your stakeholders. The project stakeholder in many cases is the face of the project. His or her perspective on the project's impact on the business is unique. It is therefore essential to obtain the stakeholder's buy-in, starting with the definition of success, especially on elements like the timelines and the testing/cut-over plan. It was essential for the stakeholder to agree to the contingency plan because it meant a less-than-ideal scenario: two cut-over sessions (including associated costs) — one to implement the temporary solution and one to implement the permanent solution. Communicate with your users. Many teams fail to communicate with their end users — those who are impacted by the project the most. This leaves the project void of the visibility it needs. Clear and frequent communication throughout a project can help make your users feel like part of the change process — they will have the proper expectations of the finish line and what it ILTA White Paper 41 takes to get there. Communication not only demonstrates the competence of the team in charge of the project, but it also showcases that they care enough about the users to keep them "in the know." In addition, communication preemptively alleviates user concerns. Success Is in the Principles Your next big project is destined for greatness if you set it up to succeed with a strong and consistent set of principles. An experienced project team with a plethora of technical knowledge and a wealth of technical tools can only take you so far; you've got to have principles.
