10 KEY CONSIDERATIONS FOR SHAREPOINT 2010 PORTALS “The more your data is structured via a good taxonomy strategy, the more effective a basic search engine will be.” Pioneering portals like Mallesons Connect and SeyfarthConnect, as well as third-party business intelligence data systems, showcase the potential; however, many firms are seeking a basic way to get started with LPM, and to do so quickly. Recommendation: A good starting point for LPM is to efficiently generate relationships across data from the individual silos of time and billing, HR, documents, email and CRM. Next, enable your interrelated data to be displayed in matter-centric, department-centric, office-centric and other views. With these tools in place, your users can analyze current and historical data to help set optimal pricing at a matter’s outset and ensure a positive rate of return. A SharePoint accelerator can help pull the various data and create these relationships to get your basic LPM model up and running quickly while you gradually develop plans to add more advanced capabilities. 8. RESOLVE POTENTIAL FRICTION BETWEEN KM AND RECORDS MANAGEMENT. As a KM or IS professional, your role is to provide access to potentially broad swaths of data in valuable ways for the betterment of your firm’s practice. Someone at your firm may be similarly responsible for limiting the availability of data for reasons that include mitigating risk and containing costs. A SharePoint deployment can create a new battleground for these two agendas, since your goal of breathing new life into your existing data could conflict with records management (RM) procedures aimed at controlling that data’s lifecycle. Consider whether your data will now be retained in ways that circumvent RM policies. Some may be stored directly in SharePoint. www.iltanet.org Portal Platforms 19
