inside ILTA INSIGHT 2013 – Subject Matters by Janet Day of Berwin Leighton Paisner Our eighth ILTA conference in London was a success by every measure. We returned to our familiar one-day format and the popular Grange St Paul's venue. Our sessions, developed by ILTA members in the U.K., delivered on the promise of content and conversation. 250+ delegates from law firms and legal departments attended, 10 percent of whom were from outside the U.K., with 12 other countries represented. Delegates from 40 law firms that are not yet ILTA members participated in the day. Gareth Ash of Allen & Overy LLP and I acted as co-chairs for the conference. We worked with local ILTA members as technical leads — many of these members had never previously been involved in developing content for a conference, so it was a good learning experience for them. They chose topics and worked with other ILTA members, contacts and suppliers to develop the sessions. Our program consisted of a thought-provoking keynote followed by three tracks of sessions: technical, knowledge management and litigation support. We ran a full day packed with educational sessions and breaks for networking. The keynote speaker provided insights into the findings of the ILTA Legal Technology Future Horizons research project, which is a global study on the potential impact of new and emerging technologies for law firms and the resulting strategic priorities over the next 106 Peer to Peer 10-15 years. The research focuses on the emerging technology timeline, major drivers shaping the business landscape and the future of the legal sector. INSIGHT delegates were the first to hear its initial findings in a kick-off keynote address from project director Rohit Talwar. After the keynote, litigation support delegates attended sessions exploring information governance, budgeting for e-disclosure and non-traditional sources of electronic evidence. There were technical sessions on whether legal is antisocial, true document collaboration, cybersecurity threats, choose or bring your own device, artificial intelligence in legal and securing mobile devices. And our knowledge management sessions focused on business adaptation with an expert session and an interactive workshop. In combination, these sessions provided a look ahead at what could be the law firm of the future. Several sessions highlighted specific implementations of leading-edge technology in law firms, including the change management issues associated with such implementations. These sessions provided practical guidance in terms of applying best practices and avoiding pitfalls with the featured technologies. Gareth and I wrapped up the conference with comments on ILTA's activities on a global basis and some personal highlights and anecdotes from the day. It's true that subject matters.
