ask the expert especially rewarding for me to mentor, nurture and recognize our fresh-out-of-college, bright individuals who are eager to find their way in the world. We call them our project team assistants, and in a short time they have proven to be one of our best assets. Some of them are so good they're already client-facing. Rick: Kim mentioned this, and I agree: One thing all the greatest and most successful leaders have in common is a passion for what they do. It's this passion that supports the important underlying foundation for leadership success. Another is being a staunch advocate for the team. Any success I enjoy in my role would not be possible without the great team I have around me. From my perspective, every success is a team success — period. A leader has to be able to keep their team working together cohesively. At a time when we're seeing a lot of change in infrastructure technology, having the ability to keep everyone working as a unified team is more crucial now than ever before. Innovations in technology are forcing all of us to rethink how we deliver IT services, putting ever-increasing challenges on traditional team environments. Great leaders are able to keep their team focused on the bigger picture despite new challenges and pressures. Another quality is being an effective team builder. Great things happen when you put the right people in the right team roles. While building and establishing a truly great team takes time and a fair amount of patience, getting this right is crucial to both team and leadership success. You'll most likely struggle to achieve success as a leader if you don't surround yourself with great people. While effective team building it's an essential skill for every leader, it can take years of experience to perfect. You have to be a mentor, and always be engaged with people at all levels. Leaders need a hunger for learning, confidence, commitment and a can-do attitude. Be flexible, intuitive, a visionary and not afraid to take risks. Communication skills and a sense of humor are also important. And last but certainly not least, leaders inspire others. I love what I do, and I'm doing what I love. It's my passion. If you're passionate about what you do, others will see this in you and feed off of that and become inspired to find their passion as well. You have a lifetime of lessons learned in achieving your success. What advice can you provide those individuals who are starting to climb the leadership ladder?
