But the bottom line in information exchange is security, along with other factors such as ease of use and ability to integrate into existing enterprise systems. In addition, the ability to remain compliant is critical. Even though today's legal professionals exchange files, conduct research, develop legal documents and perform e-discovery using tablets and smartphones, this new information exchange model must not fall outside compliance policy or disrupt the chain of custody. The tradeoff of agility for risk is a slippery slope, but with the right technology in place, organizations can walk this fine line while accomplishing more and maintaining the information management lifecycle. Users Are Consumers at Heart The desire for the latest computing devices and software applications has ratcheted up every worker's expectation for the newest technology — and ease of connectivity — in the workplace. In fact, International Data Corporation (IDC) estimates that as of March 2011, 95 percent of workers buy consumer devices that they use for work purposes. Whether it is the latest iPad mini, fastest smartphone or thinnest tablet, users are consumers at heart, and they want to use the same devices at work that they use at home. Clients also fall into this category, which means law firms should make similar choices available in their service offerings — or at least have systems that can "speak" to the latest devices.
