TOP FIVE APPS Social Media and New Business Opportunities Network Considerations for Cloud Computing FOR THE MOBILE USER BY LUKE SCHNOEBELEN OF SHOOK HARDY & BACON, L.L.P. Every day new apps and websites that promise to make your life easier pop up. See how the following apps can help you balance your professional (and personal) workload. From transcription to translation, these apps are essential to the mobile user. IFTTT.com — $: Free — Think of ifttt.com as the duct tape of the Internet. "IFTTT" stands for "If This Then That," and it is a tool that allows users to create "recipes" for automating tasks and linking popular online services. You can create a recipe to receive a text when it's supposed to rain, receive calendar reminders via email messages, and even receive a text reminder to make your morning coffee. Tips: Explore the popular recipes to get started with IFTTT, and keep an eye on added channels as IFTTT can help you live and work smarter. Evernote — $: Free ($5/mo Premium) — Imagine having a file cabinet on your phone, on your iPad and at your desk. Now imagine that this file cabinet can sync all files to all devices automatically so you have everything you need all the time. Enter Evernote. You can add images, photos, voice memos (see Dragon Dictation) and any type of text. Evernote is great for list-making (think groceries), travel records, keeping a phone log and organizing thoughts. Tips: Upgrade to premium ($5/month) to use the optical character recognition (OCR) feature and to access your notebooks offline. Also, password-protect your notebooks to provide an additional layer of security. Dragon Dictation — $: Free — This is simply the best free speech recognition application available today. Dragon will transcribe your words magically and allow you to file or share them. Tips: Use a headset. If you don't, take off your iPhone/iPad case/cover. Also, use the iPad app for nonclient work/memos and the desktop app for client-related matters. Instapaper — $: 4.99 — If you've ever muttered to yourself "There isn't enough time in the day" or "I'm too busy to read that now," consider Instapaper. This app will allow you to save articles to "Read Later" and allows for offline reading (useful the next time you're on a plane or don't have wireless). Tips: Install the Instapaper applet in your Web browser on your PC to add the "Read Later" save option at your desk. Create folders for your saved articles, so you can divide and conquer your reading list. SayHi Translate — $: .99 — If you travel to foreign countries, then this app may come in handy. It is a personal translator for your iPhone/iPad. SayHi can translate your words (spoken or written) into 32 different languages. You can share your translations in real-time or via email messages. Tips: Just try using this app. No tips are needed … it's just that good. ILTA White Paper 31
