28 WWW.ILTANET.ORG | ILTA WHITE PAPER LITIGATION AND PRACTICE SUPPORT Meet the Algorithms: AI Is Joining Your Firm significantly reduced the time needed to cope with the volume and velocity of data. A 2015 study by the Coalition of Technology Resources for Lawyers (CTRL) reported the top three uses of AI were culling, early case assessment and relevancy review. Typical AI Methods Utilized: Natural language processing, understanding semantics and noise filtering » Predictive Coding/Technically-Assisted Review (TAR): Predictive coding is an ediscovery technique where humans and machines work together to evaluate data. Humans first sample data and identify what is relevant. These randomly chosen documents are "seed" or training documents for the computer. Through sampling, the program learns what documents are relevant. Typical goals are to identify material as responsive versus nonresponsive, privileged versus nonprivileged or related to a topic, such as a particular ruling. This process greatly reduces the time needed for ediscovery and document review because the program is searching for concepts as opposed to simple keywords. For example, Boston and Beantown are the same concept. Typical AI Methods Utilized: Machine learning/predictive analytics, paern recognition, deep learning/neural networks, natural language processing and noise filtering Dr. Roland Vogl, Executive Director of CodeX, The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics, sees AI as essential to practicing law. He says, "There is a growing focus on computational law and the mechanization and automation of legal analysis. I can't understate this — this is the future of the law. AI will enhance and eventually, for some tasks, replace lawyers. This comes with the benefit of making legal options more accessible to everyone." All signs indicate that AI is becoming of greater importance to the competitive firm. How can the interested firm stay on top of this trend? Invite AI Into the Firm Eric Sanchez, Vice President of Durham, NC-based Law Offices of James Sco Farrin, has been the organization's technology advocate for over 16 years. Eric recognized the importance and value of data, which was particularly evident when the "other side" used data sets and analytics to evaluate their cases. Seeing a need within his firm, he developed data capture protocols incorporating several databases from When a goal is not achieved, it's time to determine how AI tools can assist.
