respondents’ generosity in providing information that helps their peers understand legal IT staffing trends! THE ALL IMPORTANT STAFFING RATIOS One of the most common “what do other firms do” questions we ask has to do with their ratio of IT staff to users. Without further ado, here’s the data you’ve waited for. 2008 Average Ratio Users to IT Staff (overall) Average IT Staff (overall) Average Total Users (overall) Average Ratio Users to IT Staff (small firms) Average IT Staff (small firms) Average Total Users (small firms) Average Ratio Users to IT Staff (medium firms) Average IT Staff (medium firms) Average Total Users (medium firms) Average Ratio Users to IT Staff (large firms) Average IT Staff (large firms) Average Total Users (large firms) Average Ratio Users to IT Staff (very large firms) Average IT Staff (very large firms) Average Total Users (very large firms) 36.0 16.7 405.1 41.2 2.2 79.5 41.6 5.6 199.2 30.5 13.0 362.3 25.4 57.8 1242.4 2010 35.1 10.6 289.7 37.2 2.5 75.5 39.0 6.2 209.6 33.2 11.0 331.9 26.1 43.0 1044.0 For each title in the charts, we indicate any notations of non-exempt status. Depending on the size of our respondents’ firms and their IT departments, the same person may serve in multiple roles (wear multiple hats). In those cases, the same title will appear in each applicable chart below with an estimate of the percent of FTE (full-time equivalent) the individual spends in each category of duty. For example, if a Network Administrator spends 50% of her time performing duties associated with network management, 25% of her time maintaining the firm’s website and 25% of her time as a user support professional, you’ll see the title “Network Administrator” on the three charts that fit the job descriptions with the percentages for each. A respondent’s firm may also have multiple people who hold the same title and perform the same duties; in that case, the titles are listed once at greater than 100% FTE. For example, a firm with five Exchange Administrators would enter one title at 500%. Look at the column headings to see the percentage “buckets,” and the charts will provide the number of respondents for each title. We’ve noticed that each time someone posts “the ratio question” on one of our e-groups, a lively debate ensues about the validity of the statistic, given differences in service levels, environment complexity and various other factors. In an attempt to help compare apples to apples, we correlated staffing ratios www.iltanet.org 2010 IT Staffing Survey 5
