As with all things security-related, the fundamental question is one of risk vs. convenience. If the alternative is either no PIN or perhaps a four-digit (or even six- or eight-digit) numeric PIN that gets shared with the family and shoulder-surfed on the bus, never gets forced to change, etc., then the fingerprint is perhaps a reasonable alternative. Chad Conrow Perkins Coie My short answer is yes, we will allow it. The longer answer is that currently it isn't trivial to fake the fingerprint reader on the 5s. It would take a lot of effort and a good print to begin with. Plus you need physical access to the phone. It is easier and much more reliable to buy one of the devices you can plug into the phone to extract all the data quickly. Look at a typical real-world scenario. If one of our lawyers loses their phone, what are the chances someone is going to try and find an available fingerprint to unlock the phone? Even if they are clever enough to realize the phone's data might be valuable, they're more likely to use another method to get the data. Another scenario would be someone who is targeting one of our lawyers and is interested in the data on the phone. Why go through all the trouble of acquiring prints and preparing copies using specialized materials only to find the original might not be good enough? Wouldn't someone be better served to use a hardware solution that works with any phone, any OS and doesn't rely on knowing the password or fingerprint?
