lessons learned people like to experience new technology. The answer: The Apple store. That became our model, and we set out to build a similar experience in the middle of our law firm. With the help of the Chicago Merchandise Mart and a local business interior designer, the new von Briesen University room features a bar, two U-shaped bar-height tables, a red-glass whiteboard and a flat-screen TV with a cool sound system. One Bite at a Time You might ask what someone can possibly learn in five minutes. Plenty! Here are a few examples of recent inGenious Bar topics: • 10 Things Apple Didn't Tell Anyone About iOS 7 • New Redaction Tools in Adobe Pro • How To Send a Secure Email • Dictation from the Airport Terminal with BigHand Mobile • Workshare Metadata Scrubbing Defaults and Settings • Three Clicks to Installing a New Printer • What's an "M" Drive and Why You Need One Also, with awareness as a goal, when people want to learn more about one of our inGenious Bar topics, it motivates them to schedule time with our trainer or attend a more traditional classroom session (which we still offer). As a side benefit, the attorney population has gotten to know our IT staff more closely. Working one-on-one week after week, they develop a nice rapport and break down barriers. Attorneys love the one-on-one attention they get, and they are not afraid to ask so-called "stupid" questions. The firm was recognized by the ILTA community as a finalist for the 2013 Project of the Year Distinguished Peer Award with our inGenious Bar concept. It is our hope that other firms implement this concept and see similar technology training success. Bill Caraher is the CIO at von Briesen & Roper, a Milwaukee-based law firm.
