36 M idsize law firms deliver immense value and are known for their agility and ability to adapt to market changes, often making them best- suited to meet the evolving needs of today's legal clients. Yet, when it comes to industry reports and research focused on midsize law firms and data points specific to this market segment, the options are few and far between. With this information gap in mind, Actionstep first produced the Midsize Law Firm Priorities Report in 2023 and earlier this year released the 2025 edition (its third edition). The data and findings presented in this report extend beyond surface-level trends, examining core business priorities, operational challenges, and opportunities, as well as the technology strategies that enable midsize law firms to make the most significant impact. The results offer a refreshing snapshot of midsize firm priorities and what moves the proverbial needle from both the legal and administrative perspectives. The 25-page report addresses several key topics and priorities for mid-sized firms, including the use of automation and AI, balancing cost management, talent and technology investments, the challenges of disconnected systems and data sources, and the opportunities presented by an interconnected practice management platform. AI USAGE IN LAW Law firm professionals at midsize firms are embracing AI and automation to reduce low-value work and increase strategic output. The top areas where firms have already experimented with AI include legal research (36%), document drafting (33%), and workflow and task automation (33%). 54% expect the value of AI to increase in the future, with younger professionals preferring to have AI capabilities integrated into their existing tools rather than using standalone tools.
