Growing up Jewish and having a Black aunt who lived in Little Rock, Arkansas, Canaan was exposed early on to conversations around race, religion, identity, and belonging. Being part of this committee allows Canaan to bring that personal history into a professional space, where he can help advocate for more inclusive systems and ensure that ILTA reflects the full richness of the community it serves. Canaan brings a unique perspective to the DEI Committee, shaped by his identity as a Jewish male and his close relationship with his aunt, who raised her family in the South during a time of immense social change. This gave him early insight into both privilege and prejudice, learning how racism, antisemitism, and systemic inequality show up differently but often share roots. Canaan brings that intersectional awareness and a commitment to listening, bridging gaps, and pushing for equity not just in words, but in infrastructure and opportunity. Canaan's understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion has evolved from something he once viewed as "important" to something he now considers essential. As a child, he noticed how differently the world responded to him and his extended family members, even though they were bound by love. As a professional, he has observed how these dynamics persist subtly in who gains access, who is heard, and who is promoted. From awareness to action, this evolution has been shaped by family, mentorship, and the deep conviction that inclusion makes us all stronger. Canaan's DEI story emphasizes that DEI work is personal; it starts with understanding your story and how it connects to others. He believes that we each carry perspectives that can illuminate blind spots or open doors for others. When we lean into those experiences with humility and purpose, we create space for change and genuine connection. And that connection is where real equity begins. CONCLUSION Each member of the DEIC brings many years of experience working in legal technology and represents a diverse range of professional and cultural backgrounds. Their contributions to the ILTA community have been invaluable, helping us make ILTA a welcoming and wonderful place for people of all backgrounds and experiences to continue growing in this industry.
