ILTACON Europe 2022
Picture an intimate law firm conference venue, 300 people
coming together for one day to share five education sessions
with networking breaks as one cohort. This was the 15th
ILTACON Europe. I've participated in at least 10 of these
conferences. This year's agenda was put together by ILTA
members, focusing on the themes we are all grappling
with. The energy level was great, especially for those who
haven't been to an in-person conference since 2019.
• "Human or Machine: The Trouble with Automating
Law" was an interactive and energetic keynote by
Dr. Hannah Fry, which made us think and reflect
on when and where AI makes sense in a legal
organization. She sent us all away to think about
making sure humans continue to do the tasks they
are good at, while recognizing and limiting AI to the
tasks it is good at.
• "Complexity: It Doesn't Have to Be Complicated"
was the second keynote I've heard from Dr. Stephen
Carver. This was also a very interactive, energetic and
thought-provoking session, using the 2009 Hudson
River airliner crash landing story. He reminded
us we need to understand what business problem
we are trying to solve with our projects AND focus
on the need for change management, particularly
for "Complex" problems - those non-linear, hard to
quantify projects we deal with every day.
• "The Future Workplace" was a panel discussion
asking us to be mindful of designing workplaces (not
"offices") that support the people who work wherever
that workplace is.
• "NCSC, Cybersecurity, and the Political Landscape
Post-Ukraine" was two mini-sessions, one from the
