51 I L T A N E T . O R G who'd been led to hate running by gym teachers who put too much emphasis on competition with others. The best competition is with myself, to be stronger and faster--and smarter!--than yesterday. What life lessons has your work taught you? Most people are doing their best. No one has all the answers. There's often not a single best approach. Kindness is one of the most important attributes in a colleague. All of these lessons are reinforced every time I reach out to a colleague either at my firm or beyond to get advice on a research question, or a project--or when they reach out to me. We often tell patrons that there are no dumb questions, but that should also true among our community of information and technology professionals. What qualities makes a good leader? Listening, being willing to change your mind, and embracing change, because whether it be big or small, there is always change. Do you have a life philosophy? Where does it originate and how does it shape who you are? A wise boss in a previous, non-law job had the frequent refrain of "this a relationship business, not a transaction business" and even though the context was different, it's something that's applicable in both law and librarianship. The better we get to know our attorneys and their interests, the better we can keep an eye out for material of interest. They're also more likely to consider us members of the team and provide more context about what they're doing--which results in better research. What advice would you give to your younger self? Enjoy the ride and stop stressing about the destination. I used to think I had to have everything figured out and that it was a failing not to have done so. I couldn't have been more wrong. I spent the first several years of my career stressing about whether I should go to law school. I never ended up making a decision--the dilemma just faded as I had success in my career without the additional degree.
