98 P E E R T O P E E R : I L T A ' S Q U A R T E R L Y M A G A Z I N E | W I N T E R 2 0 2 1 What Wasn't In The "ILTA Tech Survey Executive Summary"? by TJ Johnson TJ Johnson is AVP, Legal Sector Strategist at Qualitest (www. qualitestgroup.com). She has great fun focusing on "StrategicIT" – looking at innovation, internally and for clients, and thought leadership around new ways to help clients deliver successful projects. TJ has deep experience in legal technology. A familiar and well-respected figure in the legal technology industry, TJ worked in various capacities for law firms and legal departments. Most known for her recent role on the executive team of ILTA (International Legal Technology Association) where she led the strategy development and execution of ILTA's global portfolio of events, was instrumental in growing their premier conference, ILTACON, and was responsible for the vison and execution of many strategic projects. W orking as part of the volunteer ILTA Tech Survey Committee, I get to see what goes into the question formulation, the results analysis and the executive summary. There are so many audiences, so many people who look to the survey results to help them make decisions, it's a lot of pressure on ILTA to make sure the survey is as valuable as it can be within real life constraints. We developed the content for the executive summary this year with the goal of hitting the biggest trends, providing the info that would help various audiences make strategic and budgetary decisions. After the Exec Summary was published, I asked the volunteer committee if for this column we might expand a bit on what was in the Exec Summary, to think about "asking the right questions" around the tech survey and the exec summary. I asked them for analysis that didn't make it into the exec summary or made it in but had some aspect that needed more attention. Thanks to Todd Corham, Jim McKenna and Teresa Laird for their input on this. We have questions around Cloud, Mobile Devices, O365, Technology Annoyances and Printing from Home. We also note some "non-trends" – where things are just not changing, which is equally intriguing. Cloud "There was a time where firms asked "if " they would go to the cloud. The Pandemic provided the motivation to answer "when will we go to the cloud"? Now, some firms are having to answer "why aren't we in the cloud?" in the face of aging on-prem infrastructure, difficulty in finding local tech talent, and the watching others move forward faster with the cloud. A good question to ponder is "what's your backup plan if you cannot sustain your on-prem systems?". M E M B E R R E S O U R C E S
