102 P E E R T O P E E R : I L T A ' S Q U A R T E R L Y M A G A Z I N E | W I N T E R 2 0 2 1 Time Capture There's an interesting result on a new question this year related to "Time Capture" software. Time Entry software has been a part of the survey for some time. Time Capture came more into the radar when so many people working remotely with odd hours and locations, were trying to find ways to capture all their time properly. New and improved products record what's billable and appear to capture a higher percentage of billable time than traditional time entry software. We were asked to add a question this year, so we did - "Which PRIMARY Time CAPTURE Software does your firm use?" This is definitely a firm size issue. 75% of small firms don't use a time capture system, with only 16% using the two most popular products - Aderant Expert/iTimeKeep and Intapp Time (Capture, TimeBuilder). For mid and large firms, only 16% are NOT using time capture and 70% use the two main products. This will be very interesting to look at the trend next year. O365 Other than the Zoom / Teams debate, one of the largest changes is in how many firms are now on O365 and how many will be next year. Under "Which PRIMARY office application software does your firm use?", O365 was 43% in 2020 and 53% in 2021, and that's across all firm sizes. When we go to "Which office application suite do you expect to be your firm's PRIMARY office application suite 12 months from now?", it went from 60% average in 2020 to 74% in 2021. When we look at firm size for that question, 81% of small firms and 87% of the largest firms all expect to be O365 in the next year. That's a BIG change. I wonder if they will all get there and what they'll be saying about that experience in next year's survey . Non-Trends One area where it was remarkable that the numbers didn't increase between 2020 and 2021 was Online Notarization. The question we asked was "Which Remote Online Notarization (RON) tools does your firm use?" None was 79% in 2020, which only dropped to 77% in 2021. Is that because the tools aren't user-friendly or people have found ways around the need for online notarization? Only time will tell – and next year's survey. The following are results which didn't change more than a little bit over the past four years. Let us know if you have an opinion on why that is, or if you have an idea for how to frame the question differently for next year. Which time-entry solution(s) does your firm use for MOBILE time entry/recording? • Eight products in the list, no more than 1% change in market share over the past four years. Which dashboard software does your firm use for lawyers? • Virtually no change. Which PRIMARY virus scanning product does your firm use for scanning of inbound email messages? • Virtually no change Which PRIMARY brand of SAN (storage area network) solution does your firm use for very high-capacity disk storage? • 8 products listed, most of them stable for the past 4 years Which software distribution tools does your firm use for automating software installations and updates? • There are many answers here, most are stable or losing a bit of ground. Microsoft MEM (Microsoft Endpoint Manager/Intune) is the only one to make a jump of 3% in 2020 to 22% in 2021 (42% for large firms). Which PRIMARY remote-control software for helpdesk does your firm use? • 15 products have more than the requisite 2% to be displayed in the survey, of which three are new entrants and the rest are pretty stable. Which PRIMARY brand of Desktop computer is your firm currently deploying? • No surprise here, it's a Dell, HP, Lenovo market, no one holding a majority position, and that hasn't changed in years. Which PRIMARY brand of Laptop computer is your firm currently deploying? • Same story as for desktops, with the addition of Microsoft Surfaces in the mix. Which PRIMARY document management system (DMS)/enterprise content management (ECM) system does your firm currently use? • We know the players, little changes – Open Text is down, Worldox is steady, iManage and NetDocuments are up.
