lot has happened in the world since our last Peer
to Peer issue. Within the legal industry, the global
pandemic started with issues involving business
continuity. How to continue "business as usual"
when countries and states were mandating
employees' shelter in place. Our Disaster Recovery/Business
Continuity community has become quite active with our members as
they faced these issues.
The first layer of needs for all legal organizations must be
related to security. Quickly addressing the challenges of e-signatures;
e-notarizations; hearings and trials via Zoom. The new remote work
environment brought its own set of challenges of data security as
the new work-from-home scenario became a protracted one. Our
LegalSEC Summit is now a virtual conference and there are many
sessions which will be addressing security in an environment where
working remotely may no longer be a short-term situation. An added
benefit for the summit attendees is many of the sessions are eligible to self-
report for PMP, CLE and CISSP accreditations.
Another short-term effect of the pandemic was layoffs and
furloughs due to the obvious economic impact of the pandemic. Some
of our ILTA members may find themselves in the position of being laid
off or furloughed. For those members, it is important to know about
ILTA's Associate Participant Membership. It is designed to help you
stay in touch with the ILTA community until you are employed. You
can find the program requirements and application form here.
As organizations dove deeper to ensure remote work is
successful, other material business questions surfaced. Issues like:
how to run a virtual summer associate program; employees unable
to return to the office (even if they wanted to) because schools and/or
child care options are shutdown; or how to safely return to a physical
office environment when localities start lifting restrictions. These
all further highlight that the human part of the equation may be the
toughest part to address.
To tackle these challenges, the online ILTA community has
pulled together. ILTAns offered their time, expertise, and thought-
leadership to the ILTA Community so that COVID-19 education
