44 P E E R T O P E E R : I L T A ' S Q U A R T E R L Y M A G A Z I N E | S U M M E R 2 0 2 0 • The increasing trend of clients who didn't want to pay high hourly rates for trained professionals to perform menial tasks that are more efficiently automated. • The perpetual need to "Do More With Less". • Repetitive tasks were declared not to be fan favorites among attorneys or IT or QA staff (especially millennials). • Automation was seen as a critical way to drive successful digital transformation initiatives. • Basic automation of manual tasks and workflows was a big part of what The World Economic Forum was calling the 4th Industrial Revolution – there is a fundamental change in the way we live, work and relate to one another, enabled by the extraordinary technology advances we are currently seeing, similar to those of the first, second and third industrial revolutions – in this case, AI, 3D Printing, Biotech, Quantum Computing and Automation are all feeding this revolution. • Tools were maturing for many automation projects and implementing automation is often more configuration of a tool than development. And AI was being used to add power to some automation tools so they can learn and perform even more tasks. Every day, new automation tools were becoming available. And then came the Spring of 2020: • The need for lawyers and admin staff to work from anywhere has highlighted the need to review and reduce what is done manually, or what has to be done in person in an office.
