47 WWW.ILTANET.ORG | ILTA WHITE PAPER KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT KM in a Time of Innovation KM for IT Certain areas of technology are maintained by IT, including infrastructure, storage, data backup, file transfer applications, email management and folder access. Even these traditional aspects of IT's domain need KM to explore innovative options for beer data regulation and performance. Moving data to the cloud is an excellent example. At MinterEllison, we recently moved 80 percent of our business-critical applications from our existing Citrix ShareFile solution to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud, reducing the time for ad hoc file-sharing among partner law firms from hours to minutes. To do this, Minter called in the AWS data solutions group, which built a secure segregated infrastructure layer hosted at one of Amazon's onshore sites. To keep the data transfer process simple for the ediscovery team, the data solutions group also built a custom transfer application that allows internal and external data transfer in the cloud. The ediscovery team is pioneering its data migration into the cloud; the process is nearly complete. A new step such as cloud migration involves both KM and IT. KM explores the new solutions available on the market and pushes for change within the firm. The outcome of KM's research can affect any area of IT, including the basic infrastructure. These different disciplines must work together to achieve the best results. Sometimes developing proprietary applications can be the most cost-effective solution. In these cases, KM should work with the legal team to identify their needs, work with IT to realize those expectations and play a major role in testing the end product. METaskflow is an application the MinterEllison team designed last year to manage projects and assign tasks and activities to the most appropriate person on the legal team. No market application will meet a firm's existing workflow absolutely, but firms can tailor proprietary applications to bring them close to perfection. KM and LPM KM's role in legal project management (LPM) is to understand processes, educate lawyers and arrange technology training on LPM applications. Many tools fall under the broad umbrella of LPM technology, including: » Forensics data collection tools like Encase, FTK, Cellebrite and Pinpoint Harvester » Web and social media capture tools like Xi Social Discovery and Nuix » Early case assessment tools like Relativity, Nuix, Summation and IPRO » Discovery review and management tools like Relativity, CaseMap, Summation, Concordance, Case Notebook, IPRO, Ringtail, Everlaw, Kroll Ontrack and Logikcull » Transcript management tools like Case Notebook, Text Map, Summation, Live Note, IPRO, Relativity and Ringtail » Trial presentation tools like Trial Director, TimeMap, EDT and Annomap KM's role in legal project management (LPM) is to understand processes, educate lawyers and arrange technology training on LPM applications.
