16 PEER TO PEER: THE QUARTERLY MAGAZINE OF ILTA | WINTER 2016 BEST PRACTICES Certification To Boost Your Information Governance Career The professional association for records and information managers, ARMA International, defines information governance as "a strategic, cross-disciplinary framework composed of standards, processes, roles and metrics that hold organizations and individuals accountable for the proper handling of records and information. The framework helps organizations achieve business objectives, facilitates compliance with external requirements and minimizes risk posed by substandard information-handling practices." Using ARMA International's "Glossary of Information Governance Terms" as a guide, we can quickly identify several certification programs relevant to this view of information governance. We will focus on the most prominent of these certifications. Information Governance Professional www.arma.org/igp Sponsoring Organization: ARMA International/IGP Governance Board Scope of Certification: Based on ARMA's definition of information governance and the identification of key stakeholders, the IGP certification recognizes professionals who have the skills and knowledge to pull together the varying interests of the stakeholder groups and find solutions that will allow organizations to leverage information for greater value and mitigate the risks inherent in poorly managed information assets. Subject Areas Covered: 1. Managing information risk and compliance 2. Developing the IG strategic plan 3. Developing the IG framework 4. Establishing the IG program 5. Establishing business integration and oversight 6. Aligning technology with the IG framework Certified Records Manager www.icrm.org Sponsoring Organization: Institute of Certified Records Managers Scope of Certification: The CRM exam recognizes the competence of individuals in implementing records and information management programs. The CRM and IGP designations are complementary; well-established disciplines and processes in the field of records and information are also critical building blocks for effective information governance. Subject Areas Covered: 1. Management issues and RIM 2. Records and information creation and use 3. Records systems, storage and retrieval 4. Records appraisal, retention, protection and disposition 5. Technology 6. Case studies to demonstrate application Start by keeping your ILTA profile current.
