PEER TO PEER: THE QUARTERLY MAGA ZINE OF ILTA 40 The opened document displayed in a Web browser. This view is just for reading and is not intended for editing. It gave us a page count, and the paragraph numbering and styles displayed accurately. For editing you have two choices: Edit in Word or Edit in Word Online. If you want to edit the document in Word (installed version), you must sign in; however, editing in Word Online does not require a sign in. Once you reach Word Online, a ribbon similar to the installed version of Word displays, offering core features. The ribbon tabs available are: File, Home, Insert, Page Layout, Review and View. Use the "Tell Me What You Want to Do" search box if you are not finding a feature on the ribbon. For example, word count is not on the ribbon, and typing in that search term provides you with instructions for counting the number of words in the document. While editing in Word Online, you can always access the installed version of Word by clicking "Open in Word" found above the ribbon. FEATURE EVALUATION The numbering did not display accurately, and tracked changes did not display. Without a doubt, these complex features are best left for the installed version. However, comments display nicely, and you can use all associated features offered in the installed version such as create new, reply, delete or mark as done. FINAL NOTES • The hyperlinks in the table of contents help with navigating; however, you cannot update the table of contents. This reinforces leaving major editing to the installed version. • When reopening the edited document in the installed version of Word, comments marked as done and replies were intact, and heading styles reflected the original numbering scheme. At first glance, Word for iPad displays the document accurately with five ribbon tabs across the top that include Home, Insert, Layout, Review and View. Basic edits were easily accomplished, and we were thrilled to see that numbering was intact. FEATURE EVALUATION On the Home tab, the Styles button displays the same styles found in the Style gallery when the document was created. To apply numbering, tap the desired heading style or any other style and edit away. The Numbering button on the Home tab does not offer multilevel numbering. Consequently, you cannot create a multilevel numbered list from Word for iPad, but you can apply styles if the document was already set up using styles linked to a multilevel list. OTHER NOTABLE FEATURES • Type a number manually followed by a space to convert the number to a heading style. This was a great find! However, use with caution as manually typed numbers might not always convert to a heading style. • Table of contents can be updated. Tap and hold anywhere in the table of contents, then tap Update Field. • Tracked changes display as All Markup. Tap the vertical gray line in the left margin to toggle to Simple Markup (vertical red line). • You can add a comment or even reply to an existing comment — it is all about where you tap first! Tap inside an existing comment and it knows to reply. Tap outside an existing comment and it will set you up for a new comment. FINAL NOTES • Make sure you are signed in to a Microsoft account before editing the document. • In the free version, not all features are available. For instance, section breaks cannot be added without an Office 365 subscription, although existing section breaks display fine. Inserting section breaks on the iPad is cumbersome and best left to the installed version. • After reopening the edited document in the installed version of Word, all edits and formatting appeared to be perfect.
