the quarterly magazine of ILTA 57 Peer to Peer Microscope on Wireless Technology View the entire 2009 Technology Survey online at iltanet.org one of ilta's gems is our annual technology survey. this year's survey touches on 175 "data points" at 455 participating firms and is the most comprehensive and detailed legal technology review we have ever presented. a quarter of the questions are new ones, due to the every-changing nature of technology. the new questions offer a snapshot of current installations. some of our questions have been polled for a decade or more, and they provide a good overview of the evolution of specific components of the legal technology landscape. ilta's annual technology survey is now available on the ilta website. to access the survey, members must first login to the ilta website as otherwise the publication will not appear. Please note that due to the size of the Pdf publication, it may take several moments to open. It appears that more firms are allowing a little diversity in supporting wireless e-mail devices. 62% of firms supported only one platform in 2007. In 2008, that dropped to 58%, and this year the number is 50%. Those firms that support one platform, or that are working toward standardizing to a single wireless e-mail platform, utilize BlackBerry Enterprise Server (81%). Next in line is MS Exchange 2003 SP2 (ActiveSync). One interesting question to the security-minded among us was whether firms had policies that allow personal PDA devices to be connected to e-mail systems. 57% of the respondents said yes, 43% said no. Because this was the first time for this question to be asked, we cannot see a trend forming yet. But it will be interesting to see if mobile security measures or attorney demand will prompt the number of personal PDAs connecting to firm e-mail systems to grow. The application most often used for time entry on wireless devices was APS DTE InHand (39%).
