ILTA WHITE PAPER: JULY 2014 WWW.ILTANET.ORG 2 This year's white paper takes us from big data to big ideas. It seems that everyone is talking about data this year. Is it possible to have too much data? How do we demystify the data we have and use it to advance the strategies of our businesses? Catherine Monte and Kim Stein lead us through some solutions that have helped law firms make sense of their complicated data streams. Stephanie Abbott helps us as KM professionals to stay focused on the right signals, as a way of coping with the "noise" that can prevent our ability to think clearly. And Toby Brown reminds us that even if the data were perfect, it's not just the analysis, but the application — how we use the data to change our business models (and maybe even lawyer behavior) — that provides the competitive advantage in this uncertain marketplace. On the subject of changing lawyer behavior, Milena Higgins offers litigators some practical methods used in Agile technology development to bolster efficiency and cut the cost of litigation. And on the subject of the uncertain marketplace, Ginevra Saylor discusses the challenges and opportunities for KM when law firms merge, drawing from her own experience and that of several other KM professionals who have survived a merger (and lived to tell the story!). Additionally, we provide our biennial KM Survey, to help you track the trends, technologies, and organizational structure of legal KM as it continues to evolve. We'd like to extend a special thanks to the authors and their organizations for sharing their wisdom and experience. If you have any comments about the content or suggestions for future topics, please contact Chris Boyd (cboyd@wsgr.com) or any member of the ILTA KM Peer Group Steering Committee.
