From a technical perspective, the process involves taking relatively unstructured data and finding the hidden structures and relationships within it. Of course, knowledge management (KM) professionals will find data analytics tools and approaches very useful, since KM is all about making information more useful or, more specifically, making it more actionable to the people who need it.
