The extensive research gathered by Doris Kearns Goodwin and her storytelling style make this book a fascinating, enjoyable read. I recommend this book highly. At 928 pages you might want to consider the digital version if you'll be carting it around, but look up the hardcopy for the excellent pictures throughout. Maryanna Bell of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP What city do you live in? Highland, IL, near St. Louis How long have you worked in legal? Since 1979 What topics related to your profession are you most interested in right now? I'm interested in the extent to which legal advice functions can be automated. The amount of computing power we can bring to that is already substantial, but growing at logarithmic rates. The question is can some level of "judgment" be extracted from algorithms? In the financial sector, billions of dollars trade every day based solely on automated financial judgments. I expect that to bleed out into other sectors, including ours. How did you come up with the Law2020 initiative? It came from the same place that song lyrics or poems come from, which is some nameless part of the ether. Beyond that, I can't say. What's most exciting to you about the future of legal? From a substantive standpoint, it would have to be data privacy, and that holds from the technology perspective as well. What are some of the bands on your playlist? The artist Hozier, Blondie, Pepe and the Bottle Blonds, Madredeus What's something most people don't know about you? I used to be a repo man for the IRS What do you do for fun? Write, fly, cruise in the Barefoot Lady, and fix airplanes, boats, cars and motorcycles JOHN ALBER Strategic Technology Partner at Bryan Cave, LLP
