mobile strategy because the decisions you make regarding those tactics will determine your firm's approach to security. As you balance ease of access and robust content exposure against potential data leakage, consider: • App-Level Security: Some individual apps can remotely wipe the app and any associated data from the mobile device with no third-party mobile device management (MDM) system. For example, Good and Accellion provide secure "containers" on iOS devices that prevent data from being sent outside those containers, and control offered by your current MDM solution, you might need to budget an upgrade as part of your mobile initiative. Installing the firm's MDM system is the most secure method to control enterprise content on personal devices. The downside is many employees might balk and find it to be intrusive, even if you stress that the only apps you will monitor and wipe are those provided by the firm. • BYO Mobile Devices: Providing secure access to your enterprise content on personal devices can be one of the biggest wins of your initiative, generating significant goodwill for your department (as well as enhancing client service). Allowing the use of personal devices for work purposes will require the most detailed balancing of benefits against risks. • Sandboxed Apps Only: A sandboxed app runs in a secure container (app-level security), and data in it cannot be moved to, accessed with or stored via any other app on the device. Self-contained apps can provide you with greater flexibility to provide them on personal devices, as you do not need to install a separate MDM solution on each device. On the other hand, these apps might not provide access to all the content you have identified as part of your goals. • Mobile Device Management Systems: Most firms that deploy corporate-issued tablets and smartphones utilize an MDM solution to track those devices.
