In one such document review, Ballard used Syllo to review 100,000 documents for production, then employed elusion testing and second-level review for quality assessment. A sample of irrelevant documents was examined to assess whether the technology failed to identify appropriate items. The testing and review process revealed that Syllo identified more than 99% of relevant documents, a far higher number than human reviewers achieve. By contrast, the recall rate for human reviewers is typically 80%, with a maximum review rate of 80 documents per hour. A human review of 100,000 documents would likely take around 1,250 hours. Syllo performed exceptionally well and at a significantly lower cost than traditional review technologies. After several months of working with Syllo, Ballard deployed the tool to automate reviewing over 1.1 million documents. Syllo provided its platform to Ballard within a dedicated private cloud environment and guaranteed that the platform would not store or use the firm's data to train a large language model unless Ballard requested and authorized such actions. Furthermore, Syllo is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant, meaning that it is subject to regular security reviews by an independent auditor. Syllo team members met regularly with Ballard Spahr's litigators to discover ways to optimize the platform's existing features and suggest new ones. The platform stores the full scope of data used in litigation and then streamlines the workflows employed in factual investigation, case building, and work product generation. Through this collaboration, Ballard team members developed a trusted relationship with Syllo, which was willing and able to tailor its system to the firm's specific needs. Ballard Spahr's collaboration with Syllo demonstrates how generative AI tools can be implemented safely to increase efficiency, allowing litigators to focus more on high-value tasks to benefit legal clients.
