2 W elcome to the latest issue of Peer to Peer! Our focus this quarter is on Practical AI. ChatGPT is two-and-a-half years old as I write this – a precocious toddler, indeed! And version 5 is expected to be released this year. The critical cultural shift we've made within legal is changing the discussion from "should we?" to "how do we?" So, let's look at some issues around Practical AI …. How do we make AI, well, practical? (Of course, certain types of AI – such as spellcheck – have been practical for years; we're talking here about GenAI and Agentic AI.) Here are a few thoughts and tips based on the hundreds of conversations, sessions, and articles I have consumed in the past year. NATURAL LANGUAGE IS THE KILLER APP That is what makes current GenAI so accessible – we can speak with it. One of the ways we must help our lawyers is to coach them so that they do not speak to a chatbot in Boolean operators. FEARLESS INVENTORY OF YOUR DATA Garbage In, Garbage Out. That expression has been around as long as computers have existed. Be honest about the state of your data. Understand how it flows. Be clear on which data you are allowed to use. Then prioritize projects that leverage good data. BUSINESS PROBLEMS ARE IMPORTANT TOO So much of the dialogue around GenAI in legal has been about how it will transform the practice. But two other areas are equally important. • All kinds of AI are transforming the businesses we serve. Clients and business units will come to our lawyers with problems arising from applying various types of AI in those operations. Have we done enough to prepare the lawyers to talk about such issues?
