sensitive deadlines related to systems, platforms,
and security; staffing and other resource issues;
staying up to date with new technologies and
generative AI, and suddenly that level of stress
and related exhaustion can quickly accelerate to
burnout.
Several different research studies have
addressed burnout and exhaustion relevant to
the ILTA community, across IT professionals
and related organizations. Most of those studies
report similar findings: workload, insufficient
support, lack of resources, and unrealistic
deadlines impact work-life balance, overall well-
being, and job satisfaction. The State of Burnout
in Tech, a report done in 2023 by Yerbo, a former
technology research company focused on work-
related issues, reported the ramifications of
this research. Their report noted that 42% of
IT professionals considered quitting their jobs
within six months, and even among those who
reported low or moderate levels of burnout, 25%
expressed a desire to leave their company in the
near future.
According to LinkedIn News, "Four in
ten workers in the U.S. report feeling stuck and
burned out on the job." And IT, as a sector, ranks
high on their list.
More generally, stress and burnout affect not
just individuals but also the firms they work for.
Not just financially, it is disruptive and expensive
when someone leaves a job and needs to be
replaced. However, a company's reputation is also
impacted – word on the street is a real factor when
a company becomes known as a pressure cooker.
Stress and burnout are related,
but they are not the same.
We all—law firms and individuals alike—need to
understand the differences between stress and
burnout. But more importantly, we must learn what
to do about stress and burnout, both for ourselves
and those on our teams.
