O R G sensitive deadlines related to systems, platforms, and security; staffing and other resource issues; staying up to date with new technologies and generative AI, and suddenly that level of stress and related exhaustion can quickly accelerate to burnout. Several different research studies have addressed burnout and exhaustion relevant to the ILTA community, across IT professionals and related organizations. Most of those studies report similar findings: workload, insufficient support, lack of resources, and unrealistic deadlines impact work-life balance, overall well- being, and job satisfaction. The State of Burnout in Tech, a report done in 2023 by Yerbo, a former technology research company focused on work- related issues, reported the ramifications of this research. Their report noted that 42% of IT professionals considered quitting their jobs within six months, and even among those who reported low or moderate levels of burnout, 25% expressed a desire to leave their company in the near future. According to LinkedIn News, "Four in ten workers in the U.S. report feeling stuck and burned out on the job." And IT, as a sector, ranks high on their list. More generally, stress and burnout affect not just individuals but also the firms they work for. Not just financially, it is disruptive and expensive when someone leaves a job and needs to be replaced. However, a company's reputation is also impacted – word on the street is a real factor when a company becomes known as a pressure cooker. Stress and burnout are related, but they are not the same. We all—law firms and individuals alike—need to understand the differences between stress and burnout. But more importantly, we must learn what to do about stress and burnout, both for ourselves and those on our teams.
