61 I L T A N E T . O R G E ver since I happened upon this super useful legal tech resource LawNet, now ILTA, 23 years ago, I have been drawn in by the high caliber of content delivered by the dedicated staff and countless volunteers. I am sure many would agree that the annual ILTA Technology Survey is without question the crown jewel of ILTA's content and market research treasure chest. Recent ILTACON conferences have included an ILTA Tech Survey preview session featuring Tech Survey Committee members sharing key findings, themes, and takeaways. While the full 200+ question survey should be available for purchase by the time you are reading this online, I wanted to join notable takeaways from the 2023 Emerging Tech and Industry Trends: The ILTA Tech Survey ILTACON 2023 session and corresponding Executive Summary. The 2023 survey results truly lean into ILTA's "We are Peer Powered" mantra and related key themes involving collaboration, cloud adoption and expansion, and hybrid work enablement. While "LLM AI in Legal" is the talk of the town and there is no shortage of AI product announcements and AI- related surveys and reports, the 2023 Tech Survey zeroes in on the nuts and bolts of the technology ILTA members (500+ completed this year's survey) are using and relying on NOW. Applications in the cloud … there's no denying Not surprisingly, cloud adoption among ILTA members continues to climb with 35% revealing they are "mostly in the cloud", up 4 percent from last year, and 44% focused on "cloud in every upgrade". Barriers to adopt cloud-based technologies still remain and are mostly focused on costs associated with moving to the cloud, and increasingly integrations with third-party tools. Editor's note: Onsite at ILTACON 2023, ILTA's Director of Publications and Press, Beth Anne Stuebe, sat down with Jobst Elster to discuss the 2023 Technology Survey. Over the discussion, it was clear that, with his years of Press and Publications experience, Jobst was positioned to take an early-look at the 2023 ILTA Technology Survey. Below, you will find his no-holds barred view of the Survey from an early vantage point. 13% 21% 26% 23% 26% 41% 38% 37% 58% 49% 60% 50% 22% 28% 33% 35% 38% 47% 50% 49% 65% 61% 67% 67% 27% 31% 35% 39% 41% 50% 56% 59% 67% 67% 74% 73% 32% 37% 38% 42% 47% 53% 57% 67% 68% 70% 76% 80% 0% 20% 40% 60% 80% 100% Conflict of interest Accounting or Finance Learning Management System (LMS) Time and billing Microsoft SharePoint eDiscovery and litigation document review Human Resource Information System (HRIS) Document Management System (DMS) or Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Payroll Email archiving Email security Email N/A 3% 4% 10% 9% 14% 15% 11% 16% 14% 20% 4% 2% 9% 10% 13% 14% 19% 16% 21% 22% 23% 4% 1% 10% 11% 16% 18% 24% 23% 26% 22% 21% 2% 2% 10% 10% 16% 22% 24% 24% 25% 25% 27% 0% 20% 40% 60% 80% 100% None/Not applicable Other Knowledge Management (KM) Practice management Case management Digital dictation Project management Docketing (rules-based calendaring) Marketing Records management (RM) Intellectual Property (IP) or Trademark Management 2023 2022 2021 2020 Currently or soon -to -be cloud -based solutions
