34 P E E R T O P E E R : I L T A ' S Q U A R T E R L Y M A G A Z I N E | S U M M E R 2 0 2 2 Cloud platforms like NetDocuments, with its cloud- only security framework, offer a proven and independently validated security, compliance, and privacy-as-a-service model that organizations of all sizes and governance complexities can rely on. As David Hansen, NetDocuments' VP of Compliance, comments: "Our customers expect the highest levels of security, and we continue to set the standard in cloud document management." David Craig, Managing Director at HBR Consulting, Information Governance (IG) practice lead, is no stranger to aligning business, risk management, and operational efficiency objectives with IG policies and data security practices. He underscores the governance points made by NetDocuments and equally embraced by mutual customers: "The next evolution is to have the right tools, policies, and, most importantly, practices that enable a culture of information governance that is part of the way business is done. How do you implement controls in a way that don't take away from the knowledge sharing and collaborative culture of the firm? It's important to lean into how lawyers work and develop effective policies that can be audited and tracked." Ron Warman sees a similar "pro-governance" trend. "We as a user community and legal industry are finally starting to see tangible movement on the records and governance side especially as security becomes a bigger concern. This becomes a big driver for a cloud native platform like NetDocuments." Prove that You're Future-Proof Often associated with a lengthy selection, implementation, and rollout process, DMS purchase decisions are no small feat. But if you're upgrading your DMS or considering a switch, this is the time to evaluate whether your current path is the right one. How can firms make sure that their technology business partner is future-proof, not only in terms of financial viability but also regarding the product roadmap and cloud innovation strategy? Brian Podolsky, Practice Group Leader at Kraft & Kennedy and veteran of hundreds of enterprise content management (ECM) design and implementation projects, helped shed some light on what ILTA members should be asking their cloud DMS/ECM vendors during the evaluation phase and before they purchase. Brian stated, "You definitely want to know how much of the vendor's revenue goes back into R&D. And if and how that is expected to change in the next five years. How have support or platform maintenance teams grown in the past five years, and how does the vendor expect them to grow? Also, of importance is how many versions of the back-end platform customers are running in production. Is that expected to change in the next five years? We also suggest talking to technology partners who should be able to identify the marketing/sales speak and guide firms toward their goals." Partners Unite In speaking with Affinity Consulting, Element Technologies, eSentio, and Kraft Kennedy for this article, it became F E A T U R E S "68% of identified data breaches in the UK legal sector were caused by insiders."
