Several years ago LegalMation rolled out a product that uses A.I. to answer complaints, respond to initial discovery, and propound discovery requests, billing its solution as "capable of reading a complaint, or other lawsuit-initiating document, and producing a complete set of initial responsive documents tailored to the jurisdiction where the action was filed…" LegalMation's Complaint Analysis feature uses artificial intelligence to determine the main allegations in the complaint and to respond accordingly. It shaves hours off the initial drafting of the aforementioned documents. Other vendors would soon follow suit by introducing similar A.I.-assisted document generating tools. Casetext Compose is a newer entrant into the A.I.-assisted document-generation space. 12 Compose uses A.I. plus Natural Language Processing of facts and caselaw to streamline the brief-writing process. It works by asking lawyers to select the brief topic, select whether they are the moving or non-moving party, and then to select from a curated list of specific legal arguments applicable to the brief in question. As lawyers add their facts to the brief, in narrative form, Casetext's Parallel search technology applies advanced natural language A.I. to identify conceptually-similar cases to support your facts. In the next column is a screen shot of Casetext Compose being used to prepare a Motion to Compel Discovery on Wage and Hour Claims. The legal arguments regularly asserted, along with supporting case law by jurisdiction, are readily available to add to the brief (see left-hand of the image), cutting down on associate legal research and writing time. • A.I.-assisted Automation. A.I.-assisted automation is also gaining traction within law firms. From document automation (where attorneys create a template once, such as a settlement agreement or handbook, and subsequently generate customized versions), to Robotic Process Automation (using software to automate an administrative workflow, such as the chain of events necessary to pull a complaint from PACER), automation improves efficiency, ensures consistent work-product, and allows attorneys to focus on higher-level work. Big Data Meets Big Law: The Value of Analytics Lawyers were traditionally valued by their clients for their hunches and anecdotes – formed by their isolated appearances with a particular judge or opposing counsel, and often somewhat foggy due to passage of time. The "Big Data" landscape is changing all of this. 13 While those hunches are still valued, the best lawyers supplement their instincts with objective, data-driven analytics. From cell phone data, to internet traffic, to GPS records, to smart devices, to legal filings, data is literally everywhere. Recent studies suggest approximately 1.7MB of data is created every second by every person. 14 Broken down, 1 MB equates to roughly 500 pages of Web Browsing F R O M T H E K M C C T
