11 I L T A N E T . O R G technology (I call them my gadgety attorneys); providing effective training formats; taking the time to implement properly for both processes and programs; prioritizing security and compliance and anticipating the needs of the 2021+ user base. For the legal industry taking programs to the cloud has been one of the most impactful. With a fiduciary obligation to clients, employees, shareholders and others, going to the cloud is a logical next step for many legal technologies. It is the obvious choice, but remains the complicated option, and challenges include secure/ privacy, complexity of managing technologies and processes, vendor relationships and service level agreements (SLA) for access, uptime, etc. Litigation support, and perhaps other areas, now need to succeed in not only having successful vendor relationships, but having beneficial vendor contractual relationships. Contracting for services for a duration of time in a dynamic environment is a challenge many of us face. With new litigation support technologies being released annually, or more frequent, how do I best plan with a 3-5 year contract cycle. Do Bleeding Edge technologies have a place in the legal industry? Yes, I believe they do. Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be prevalent in next technologies I heard somewhere (and apologies if it was you, and I am not citing your brilliance) "Artificial Intelligence is the name for software that has yet to be named". That definition speaks to me as all new technologies flow into our work flow / processes and eventually become standard components that do not require special planning or coordination. In my specialty, litigation support, our lifecycle of AI is tracking with conceptual analytics. As with so many other areas, we are seeing the adoption time decrease as new technologies are employed where there is a value, with an increased willingness to use new processes. As we explore the challenges of adapting next technologies and putting them into practice, there is comfort in the knowledge that this topic is evergreen. While we may have experienced unprecedented motivation to adapt to next technologies, our industry continues, and will continue, to strive to meet the business needs.
