With such a specific specialty that manages client data and not law firm data – I do delver technology to my case teams, but not in the core competencies / back office. My experiences have shown me that generally, as a whole, the legal market is well-established as change-resistant. Whether we talk about the "old normal", the "old not-normal" the "new normal" or "future normal" trials and tribulations will persist, as always – but perhaps the breadth, width and height of barriers are morphed to be a new dragon that shall be slayed. When I speak of new technologies I think about not only the information technology aspect, but also the processes. Operations is an integral component of technology from planning through implementation / training and then support / maintenance. My go to motto is "good process is good process". Many times I have dragged a case team away from defining database fields to talking about how the process of a document review should be designed to meet their goals. The devil is always in the details, and it has less to do with computer programs than people believe it does. Implementing any new technology into practice involves planning – but now that we have experienced an intense period of triage-based planning (to speak nothing of emergency implementation) – I think we will adapt in different ways. I really would like to type "better" ways, but time will tell and I am hopeful but practical. The one commodity that is in short supply, is time – and especially when we need to be able to experience and respond to our altered industry culture (. Some of our traditional market barriers may be reduced or eliminated, invariably others will emerge as challenge-leaders. Regardless, next technology will have to deal with adaptive challenges. In the past year we have realized a breakdown and morphing of prior barriers. To update just a few pre-2020 barriers that will be challenges next technologies will address differently: attending to the resisters of change; those that just want to have new Cindy MacBean is Litigation Support Manager at Honigman LLP.
