What we also learned from the Community
Survey is that ILTAns are continuing to look for
ways to give back and grow their skills through
volunteering. This finding aligns well with
a recent Board initiative tasked to the ILTA
Volunteer Leadership Task Force (VLTF). The
initiative focuses on investigating, evaluating
and, if needed, reimaging a volunteer structure
that best supports myILTA. The project's goals
include seeking to design a volunteer structure
that is nimble enough to quickly respond to
emerging circumstances, requires minimal
appropriate overhead, and maximizes skills
building and career enhancing opportunities for
ILTA's volunteers into the foreseeable future.
The VLTF was tasked to deliver a
recommended volunteer structure to the Board
by April 2021. Some of the factors this volunteer
group is researching and plan to incorporate in
the deliverables includes:
• targeting younger ILTAns, international,
corporate and diversity needs;
• micro-volunteering opportunities;
• providing clear and enhanced
professional skills and mentoring;
• providing clear volunteer career
pathways and creating resources to
better promote volunteering;
• considering how the nature and
frequency of local meetings and in-
person events are changing;
• increasing emphasis on and need for
digital events including increasing
speed in which to deliver timely,
relevant and actionable content and
events for maximum nimbleness;
• inclusion of business partners
to benefit from their leadership,
insight and educational content
contributions; and
• better utilization and clarity of staff
roles to move initiatives forward
To accomplish this, the VLTF has been
reviewing recent volunteer and staff feedback and
engaging with volunteer groups.
There is much work to be completed as
the VLTF continues to ramp up their efforts
to formulate a proposed volunteer structure
to present to the Board of Directors in April.
The group has discussed possibilities of
recommending no or only modest changes to the
current structure but will only know the true
outcome once their research has been completed.
The VLTF's recommendations will not be final
but, instead, the beginning of a long journey
where all ILTAns work together to build a future
volunteer program that is nimble, flexible, and
impactful.
