For me, 2020 will forever be a year of … surprises. Now I realize some people actually hate surprises, (I myself have mixed feelings), but I can choose to do a couple of things with 2020; I can remember it all for the bad, for all of the good, or try to remember it all for savoring and learning. My goal? Savor and Learn. In addition to the many learnings and time well spent with my boys, earlier this spring I sent my 17 year old to the local market to bring home 2 cherry tomato plants to round off our large suburban garden. They were small, but healthy looking, and tagged appropriately as both being cherry tomatoes. As spring turned into summer, both plants were thriving, however, it was clear only one of them was a tomato plant. So what was this imposter? I waited a bit, continuing to care for it to see if blooms or fruit would ever grow, and the answer was no. So I decided to compare it with my vast herb garden, and although it looked similar, it matched nothing. After much research I learned that indeed it was not a tomato plant, but lemon balm. Now, if you are not an herb enthusiast you may not understand what an amazing find this was, but lets just say, the surprise was far more rewarding than the comfortable expectation of the tomato plant. (Look up Lemon Balm, I highly recommend it). So now that we are experiencing a summer of lemon balm seltzers, gelatos, and savor salmon, I am growing to be open to the change that is inevitably coming.
