Jump-Start New Associates with KM Boot Camp by Ginevra Saylor of Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP Year after year, those of us in practice support roles at law firms are asked to find novel solutions to the many challenges our law firms face. As we invest in expensive technology, add people and spend hours developing solutions, new buzz words and excitement make their way around the legal market. At times, it turns out that the new solution was not quite the answer — or worse — a more pressing problem eclipses the first. Next thing we know, those same old problems creep back to haunt us, and we are throwing more time and money at them yet again. As a confirmed knowledge management (KM) zealot, I like to think we can do better. In these uncertain economic times, most firms have neither the means nor the appetite for buying new tools or developing expensive solutions. Practice support people are asked to do more with less, and lawyers with busy practices simply have no time to even think about the problems, let alone resolve them. Most firms have an underused resource right at their fingertips — one that is low-tech, smart and reliable. That resource is the new associate, and he can help solve some troubling and persistent problems. Peer to Peer 49
