52 PEER TO PEER: THE QUARTERLY MAGAZINE OF ILTA | FALL 2017 Whatcha Readin'? and A Peer to Revere MEMBER RESOURCES Whatcha Readin'? Red Teaming by Bryce Hoffman Red Teaming, originally an United States Army term, is a "structured, iterative process … to continuously challenge plans, operations, concepts, organizations and capabilities in the context of the operational environment and from our partners' and adversaries' perspectives." The book, Red Teaming, encourages the reader to use this process to overcome mental blind spots and cognitive biases. I think this concept could be applied to any legal or IT department and I look forward to puing it into practice. –– Luke Schnoebelen of Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP (Luke met the author in the Las Vegas airport aer ILTACON. They talked for 45 minutes about red teaming.) Black Mass: Whitey Bulger, the FBI and a Devil's Deal by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill This is a riveting read on the culture and ethos of the Boston area during the 70s, 80s and 90s. As a bonus, the book explains legal processes so well, I am quoting sections of the book in my on-boarding guide for staff new to the legal field. –– Samantha Duckworth of Verrill Dana LLP Onward by Howard Schultz The downfall of Starbucks?! Onward explains how the company refocused its strategy on the customer and the user experience. This was such a great read the first time, I am reading it again. The concept of focusing on the user translates well to the legal industry. –– Meredith Williams of Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win by Gene Kim, Kevin Behr and George Spafford I listened (Audible version) to this outstanding and relatable read/listen during my commute. I highly recommend it for anyone working in IT at any level. –– James McKenna of Fenwick & West The ILTA community abounds with avid readers. Here are some recent recommendations. You've written about many aspects of e-discovery for ILTA. What are the top three ways information governance impacts your work? Every phase of the Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM) is affected by information governance (IG) and the EDRM is a large part of my day-to-day. Specifically, IG impacts my work in determining how to collect, manage, and archive data. • Collection - working with IT and individual custodians to understand IG policies for preservation and collection, and implement defensible workflows that are least burdensome for all players • Management - develop IG policies that address data management across the EDRM, particularly storage and retention of client data on firm and third party networks • Case closure - collaborate with IT to define IG policies that address treatment of data, particularly client data, at the close of a maer to reduce risk and limit liability How has volunteering for ILTA helped your professional development? Working with ILTA is a rewarding experience. ILTA's community is rich with talent and ideas, and volunteering provides an opportunity to work with my peers and collaborate on exciting projects. It creates new opportunities, provides a network of amazing individuals and fosters connections in the legal tech space that are rare to find. What is something most ILTA members don't know about you? I love cooking. I come from a Spanish background and food plays a big role in my life. I am oen in the kitchen spending time with family and friends. What do you like to do for fun? I'm an avid gardener. I have a rooop garden in South Philadelphia and it is one of the best spots in town. If I'm not working or cooking, you'll find me on the roof with my Padrón peppers.
