Have I sought and obtained the knowledge to enable me to behave in a data-responsible manner? PROCESSES Have I developed strong processes that demonstrate to the enterprise professional how to execute the tasks necessary to comply with directives? Am I applying the prescribed processes to enable me to carry out my responsibilities related to creating a data-responsible culture? ACCOUNTABILITY Am I continually updating and sharing relevant information necessary to empower enterprise professionals in their work? Have we implemented the communication channels to support data stewards as they become stronger decisions makers regarding enterprise data? Have I carried out my responsibilities to promote a data-responsible culture? FEATURES Achieving Sustainable Data Governance professionals provide vital feedback to ensure that the directives work in practice. ยป What: What is being governed? What are the directives that must be followed? The subject-maer experts lead the charge in craing the organization's directives. They have the requisite know-how to create the guidelines necessary to build a responsible data culture. IT, as expert over data access and management, may dispense directives such as don't share your password, create a password over eight characters or change your password every ninety days. Similarly, the legal department may implement retention requirements based on data type or storage medium. Subject-maer experts must cra guidelines in policies and procedures that are easy to understand and follow for all areas of governance. How: How will the directives be carried out? How will we know whether the directives are followed? The responsibility lies with subject-maer experts to define clear processes to empower enterprise professionals to carry out directives. A strong compliance framework ensures that the enterprise can appropriately assess whether the established directives are followed. Data Stewards: A Deeper Dive How do you transform the traditional data governance practice into one where everyone owns responsibility for data? The linchpin in the data governance success story is the data steward. Being a data steward is not about creating a new role or assigning a new title. Data stewardship is more about the behaviors of enterprise professionals who have adopted a data- responsible mindset. Empowering Professionals To Embrace Data Stewardship Leadership is tasked with creating an environment in which education, processes and accountability are central to the ability of everyone within the enterprise to embrace their respective data responsibilities. Data rules the day and the enterprise, but do we have the foundation to effectively govern all of this enterprise data? These questions and a focus on action in the primary areas noted above form the core of a sustainable, effective data governance program.
