14 PEER TO PEER: THE QUARTERLY MAGAZINE OF ILTA | SUMMER 2017 BEST PRACTICES Transforming the Learning Landscape One Byte at a Time Intuitive and Ubiquitous Artificial intelligence (AI) examples include natural language processing, machine learning, robotic process automation and more. AI is already changing the way people interact with technology. Consider the conversations people have via customer service chats with bots on the web, the questions asked of Google using mobile phones and the assistance requested of Alexa via the Amazon Echo speaker at home. In each case, people are interacting with technology through an AI virtual assistant. We are rapidly moving away from accessing websites or mobile apps for information to a more intuitive way of communicating via AI to get what we need. AI will have a significant impact on how our learning systems are built, consumed and delivered. As AI gains popularity, it will be important to create learning opportunities to promote engagement between people and AI via machines, devices or robots to facilitate a beer understanding of what the technology is doing and how it enables learners to reach their goals. CINDY MITCHELL Cindy Mitchell is the Director of Product Development at Traveling Coaches and has over 20 years of experience in the design and development of technology solutions that deliver holistic and personalized learning experiences. The popularity of fitness trackers, wearable cameras, heart rate monitors and GPS tracking devices continues to rise due to their convenience and flexibility. On the near horizon are "hearables," wireless earbuds that not only allow music and conversation but embrace augmented reality and layered listening technologies. Think about the potential productivity gains for legal professionals who use wearables to send information via text, email and social networks based on their gestures and voice commands. Imagine receiving visual reminders and engaging gamified task lists. The progression of the digital revolution and the people empowerment it affords makes it easier than ever to deliver a learning experience that gives new meaning to the term learner-centric. Some think these emerging technologies are over-hyped, but we should not underestimate the potential they have for accelerating and deepening the learning experience. P2P Think about the potential productivity gains for legal professionals who use wearables to send information via text, email and social networks based on their gestures and voice commands.
