73 WWW.ILTANET.ORG In what city are you located? Beautiful Melbourne, although this photo of me is on the Sydney Harbor Bridge. What aspect of IT operations should leaders focus on most? Non-operations. There is great opportunity for legal technology leaders to move beyond operations to become client-facing and an integral part of the services law firms provide to their clients. What's the biggest operational difference you notice between Australia and other regions? It is a very competitive market in Australia, so firms look for alternative types of resourcing and cost efficiencies. This has seen Australian firms have a greater uptake of cloud and other managed services. How has being an ILTA Knowledge Advisor been professionally rewarding? I get to catch up once a month with a group of very forward-thinking people, and we have the freedom to kick around "blue sky" and cuing-edge ideas for ILTA. I love that we can be pioneering thought leaders and can push the boundaries. What's something your ILTA peers might not know about you? I am a "Kiwi," and, although I have lived in Australia for a long time and love it here, I am still a very passionate NZ "All Blacks" rugby supporter. P2P Berys Amor Director of Technology, Corrs Chambers Westgarth Knowledge Advisor, ILTA Whatcha Readin'? and A Peer to Revere MEMBER RESOURCES Whatcha Readin'? A PEER TO REVERE Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman by Robert K. Massie Massie is terrific at this kind of rich historical biography. Young, German Sophia is sent off to wed the future emperor of Russia, leaving her language, religion and family behind. She manages to end up as empress and rules for 34 years of wars, affairs and cultural changes. –– Maureen Blando of Mobile Helix, Inc. The Undoing Project by Michael Lewis Michael Lewis's newest book focuses on the decision-making process. He followed the work of two individuals, Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, as they studied how decisions are made. They began by questioning everything and bringing a clinical approach to making decisions using math and logic. They proved that using intuition in uncertain situations was fraught with errors. They start the book with a look at basketball scouting and aributes that scouts and coaches believed were the basis for predicting star players. This beginning was reminiscent of his book "Money Ball" but moved quickly to this deeper, analytical study. It is a great book. –– Michael Kra of Kra & Kennedy, Inc. The Wolf in CIO's Clothing by Tina Nunno This is a great book on practical strategies for effective leadership. The author based her viewpoint on the teachings of Niccolò Machiavelli, so readers might have to get past the stigma that "Machiavellian" implies. The principles Machiavelli wrote about are just as effective on the "light side" as they are on the "dark side." The author offers a self-assessment to identify which "animal" you most align with and insight on the others you might aspire to. –– Andy Morris of Hogan Lovells Journal of Intellectual Freedom and Privacy by American Library Association's Office of Intellectual Freedom Though you might not immediately think of the local librarian as a guardian of your privacy, think again. American libraries have long advocated for intellectual freedom and personal privacy for individuals seeking new ideas and knowledge. Published monthly, the journal covers myriad topics ranging from censorship to the latest cases challenging citizens' right to access learning materials without the fear of "Big Brother" watching every move. The journal is available free online or as a print subscription. –– Adam Stone of Secure Digital Solutions, LLC The ILTA community is filled with avid readers. Here are some recent recommendations.
