53 WWW.ILTANET.ORG Here or There: Exchange On-Premises Versus Exchange Online FEATURES Uptime Aorneys can't afford to be offline. Though the perception has been otherwise, service availability for Exchange Online is guaranteed at 99.9 percent with a financially backed SLA, and Microso is working on making it higher (actual uptime is typically above 99.98 percent). Downtime typically totals six hours in a year, which is beer than a firm averages with an on- premises environment. The cloud model does, however, rely heavily on your internet connection and can be adversely affected by extreme low bandwidth or high latency. Who can you ask/blame when something's not working? You're the only client of your IT department, whereas you're one of many to Microso. Although you have an SLA with the company, you still might not feel as highly prioritized as you'd like. Configuring and Updating While an on-premises Exchange model continues to release updates periodically, it has introduced a simplified model that entails cumulative updates and, at times, service packs. With Exchange Online, Microso is able to receive instantaneous feedback on its products and continually push out updates in response. For some firms, the frequency of upgrades in the cloud model is more of a burden than an advantage, but if the stream of new features and functionality can be advocated internally, the innovation curve realized by a firm with cloud services can be much steeper than one that manages an on-premises environment. There are some configuration limitations in Exchange Online. Look, feel and other seings might not be as customizable as they are with Exchange on- premises. Some of the more relevant limits in Exchange Online are listed below, but the full list can be found at hps://technet.microso.com/en-us/library/exchange- online-limits.aspx. » Maximum Message Size = 150 MB » Maximum Primary Mailbox Size = 50 GB » Maximum Messages Per Folder = 1 million » Maximum Recover Deleted Items Period = 30 days (except for In-Place Hold) Usage Data Address Book Data Customer Data (Excluding Core Customer Data) Core Customer Data Yes Yes, as needed Yes, as needed Yes, by exception Yes, only as required in response to a support inquiry Yes, only as required in response to a support inquiry Yes, only as required in response to a support inquiry No Yes No, but may be transferred during troubleshooting No, but may be transferred during troubleshooting No Yes, with customer permission Yes, with customer permission Yes, with customer permission Yes, with customer permission No No (yes for small business customers; marketing purposes) No No TO YOUR DATA?
