external users. The secure file-sharing solution should serve as a bridge between a firm's ECM platform and its population of increasingly mobile users. Safety from Mobile App Malware Last April, 58 malware-infected apps were introduced in the Android marketplace. They ended up compromising over 260,000 devices, which Google later had to wipe clean. Mobile app marketplaces are already dangerous, and security experts expect them to become more dangerous this year as hackers shift their attention from conventional platforms and spam to mobile devices and phishing. A secure mobile file-sharing application should keep files safe from interception or tampering. Data should be isolated on the device, so that even if a malicious app is installed, the firm's data remain secure. Data Security That Complements MDM Device Security To control provisioning and securing of mobile devices, many law firms have deployed mobile device management (MDM) platforms from vendors such as BoxTone, Good Technology and MobileIron. These platforms enable IT organizations to deliver over-the-air (OTA) updates of applications, configuration settings and data to mobile devices. MDMs can also enforce basic file-access controls for internal servers and other resources. Should a mobile device be lost or stolen, IT managers can use MDM to erase the device remotely the next time it connects to the Internet. MDM solutions clearly provide a useful framework of provisioning mobile devices and mobile apps and for enforcing device-centric security controls. But MDM solutions do not address all the file-sharing and collaboration needs of attorneys and other business users. Mobile users need additional mobile file-sharing features that are specifically designed for syncing files securely across authorized devices and sharing files securely with authorized users. That's the functionality a secure mobile file-sharing solution provides.
