DELIVERING COLLABORATIVE
NFORMATION SECURITY
COLLABORATIVE I INFORMATION
by Carlos Rodriguez of Lathrop & Gage LLP
"An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us." — Art Coviello, Executive Vice President of EMC
Information security has taken center stage in the technology and risk management operations of law firms due to the flurry of articles and news stories that have unveiled problems that have persisted in the industry for years. The perceived inconvenience of policies and procedures that maintain secure information and the difficulty in quantifying the ROI when purchasing and implementing information security controls have made protecting law firm assets a seemingly low priority for firm operations. This problem is exacerbated by the lack of understanding
by executive management and staff about the types of threats out there and the controls necessary for protection. That's not to say that law firms don't have proper controls in place; in fact, many firms have good information security practices and technologies, and most are diligent when it comes to protecting client information. However, as Jeffrey Brandt, a legal IT consultant, recently put it, these days "Good enough isn't [enough].".
