the quarterly magazine of ILTA 9 Peer to Peer the past couple of years, and there are some new players providing sophisticated and effective controls to block the bad stuff. So, even if you already have a solution in place, you may want to reevaluate how effective it is against today's threats. • Get your patch management house in order. Push patches quickly upon their release and then validate that they've been applied. This includes not just Windows patches, but all the readers and players, such as Acrobat, Flash and QuickTime. • beef up your end-point antivirus protection. Most vendors are now updating their signatures several times a day. Make sure your system is configured to pull them when they're available, rather than just checking for updates once a day. If your system is capable of blocking suspicious software behavior, see if you can enable that feature. This can be tricky due to potential false positives, but it's an excellent means of preventing infection by new malware that your vendor hasn't yet created signatures for. Last, if your license is up for renewal, it's time to reevaluate the software you're using. In particular, look at proactive detection benchmarks as a guide to who's leading the market. • if you don't already have one, consider implementing an intrusion detection system that looks at your internal network traffic (as opposed to all the noise hitting your firewall). These systems can detect unusual traffic and can alert you if something is spreading, or trying to spread, within your network. Some systems can be configured to automatically block such traffic.
