33 WWW.ILTANET.ORG Testimonials from satisfied business colleagues have been gratifying, as have the early metrics supporting the repurposed content. Our legal FAQs received almost 4,800 views in June 2016; a few years back, the average view count was about 2,800 per month. Our bank branch footprint and the number of FAQs have remained fairly static over that time, so the decision to implement the new enterprise social technology already appears to be validated by a material increase in readership. Connecting People Every organization and department has a staff directory. There is no substitute for the staff directory when you want to see staff grouped by geographic region or sorted by legal practice area. However, sometimes a deeper dive is required to identify expertise within an organization. About a year ago, a tech-savvy member of the RBC capital markets global initiatives group launched a new technology tool for expertise identification and enrolled willing participants to populate the tool with data drawn from the enterprise database directory. Our general counsel group was an early adopter. The user interface is simple with three drop-down menus for: » Geographic region » Area of focus, whether along business lines (e.g., business banking) or legal subject maer (e.g., privacy and confidentiality) » A next layer of detail where appropriate (e.g., correspondent banking) The idea is not to repeat every name in our staff directory in the new tool, but rather to highlight a few individual team experts to serve as key points of contact. We have not abandoned our staff directory; we have provided an additional tool for business colleagues (and our staff ) to identify subject-maer experts within our group in a quick, user-friendly way. Searching and Streamlining Continuing professional development is a high priority at RBC, especially within the RBC general counsel group. We maintain an in-house professional development curriculum that features "hard" and "so" skills training ranging from substantive legal and technology instruction to presentation skills and leadership courses. Our "General Counsel U" programming offers an opportunity for in-house counsel to make legal presentations for the benefit of peers and business colleagues, oen in collaboration with preferred external counsel. The annual overall target for learning hours is broken down into three categories: » Professional/Technical » Personal Effectiveness » Leadership/Managerial For several years, we maintained a master spreadsheet dutifully filled in with completed learning hours by a central coordinator who had the unenviable task of compiling the data from individual reports accumulated in other spreadsheets. This spreadsheet for the general counsel group was passed up the line to another coordinator for a larger group within the enterprise to perform yet another consolidation process. The reporting process was not broken, but repurposing the learning hours made sense. Our capable technology support team developed a streamlined application to eliminate the old spreadsheet and render an easier, quicker and more accurate compilation of data. Old Is the New New By building on existing data and past successes and repurposing with technology upgrades, we have made our operations more agile and beer able to serve our organization.
