5 WWW.ILTANET.ORG From ILTA's Leadership MESSAGES The business of law. The practice of law. These two notions have oen seemed distant cousins, with sharp lines drawn between administrative personnel and lawyers. But change has been afoot for many years, and these disciplines are experiencing deeper collaboration, a clearer understanding of each other, and the knowledge that when the two sides of the coin work in harmony to delivery client value, everyone wins. Content contributors for this issue of our magazine have experience in the administrative arms of a firm, in practice groups, from the corporate law department perspective and from the experienced vendor community. In short, our stack of coins is high, and the bonus accrues to you, the reader. Our authors tell you how to grow your revenue, watch your boom line, increase your efficiency, enhance user adoption of new technology, measure your service desk, leverage data analytics to tell your client's story, and employ the power of design for legal innovation. The business and the practice will benefit from the wealth of knowledge and experience shared in this magazine. Tell a friend about ILTA, where both sides of the coin find value! Where do you fall? Analytics To Tell Better Stories Using analytics can make you the most customer-focused firm. The Industrial Revolution of Legal Law firms are merely another cog in the legal supply chain. Magazine of the International Legal Technology Association ILLUSTRATION BY THOMAS BOUCHER, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED The Business and Practice of Law The Business and Practice of Law As we move into fall, we celebrate the highly successful ILTACON 2016 event held in late August at National Harbor, Maryland. Our Annual Meeting, held during that event, allowed the Board to provide a report on the successes of the past year and to celebrate our many volunteer teams who are vital to the programming you experience year-round. At this year's meeting, I discussed two additional topics: the search for our next chief staff executive and the proposed changes to our Board election process. I've provided messages to the membership regarding Randi Mayes's retirement plans and our process for seeking her successor. We are aided by Veed Solutions, an executive search firm with deep roots and experience in association leadership. The position profile has been made available on the Veed Solutions website and on ILTA's Career Center. Candidate veing and interviewing will proceed through the end of the year. We're hopeful to have the new Chief Executive Officer on board by spring 2017. Following more than a year of research, dialog and analysis of Board election process best practices, we assimilated the information as well as the input of our members, our sister associations, our current and past volunteer leaders and association consultants. The recommendations we propose are intended to sustain talented leadership that will continue to chart a course for our future. In addition to announcements at the Annual Meeting and the town hall that was held later that day, we have communicated our recommendations for changes to our Board election process via ILTA's Governance community discussion forum (with reminders via the General Membership community). We are hopeful you are taking advantage of the recordings and other information provided to inform your consideration of our recommendations for the creation of a Talent Council that will continually support leadership development. They will have a critical role in each Board election cycle to vet nominees for service and provide a slate of qualified candidates for ratification by the membership. As the Board continues to develop a strategic plan that will set a vision for the next three years, we look to your input. The changes in our technology, our processes, our professional roles and the industry itself will be our focus as we look to provide solid education and peer connections to assist you through those changes. Many thanks for your active role in ensuring the premiership that is our hallmark. MEREDITH L. WILLIAMS ILTA President mlwilliams@bakerdonelson.com
