76 PEER TO PEER: THE QUARTERLY MAGAZINE OF ILTA | FALL 2016 EXTRAS Efficiency Opens Up New Opportunities Law practice today is a land of opportunity. Technologies and processes that make legal work more efficient means lawyers can do more for underserved consumers and take advantage of additional possibilities. by Noah Waisberg of Kira Systems Efficiency Opens Up New Opportunities Underserved Legal Consumers Being more efficient can open up opportunities to sell more legal services aimed at underserved areas, which fall into three categories: Access to Justice Cases: Those who need legal services but are without the means to pay premium prices for a lawyer. Middle-Class Legal Needs: Well-off people who do not spend money on legal services that would help them, such as resolving disputes, negotiating employment contracts or writing wills. Corporations: Large companies that do not obtain all the legal services they need. 1 2 3 New Opportunities Performing work more efficiently opens up two types of opportunities: More of the Current Work: Efficiency makes it possible to win work away from less efficient competitors, but it also offers the opportunity to upsell clients on more work by offering beer value. New Work: There are many opportunities to offer new legal services for which clients will pay. For example: » Offer your clients a contract management system » Help them determine whether their contracts have Foreign Corrupt Practices Act compliance language » Ensure legacy contracts meet company standards With efficiency, today's legal horizon is all about opportunity, but you must seize it.
